How do I apply for a one-shot deal?
If you already are receiving ongoing cash public assistance, you can apply for the emergency housing grant known as a one-shot deal either at your Benefits Access Center or through Access HRA. When you log into your account on Access HRA, you would select “request special grant” and then apply for the one-shot deal. If you do not have an open and active cash public assistance case, then you would apply for a one-shot deal the same way that you would apply for cash public assistance, as described above.
What do I need to provide to qualify for a one-shot deal?
Unless you already have an open and active cash public assistance case, you will need to provide all of the documents required to open a cash public assistance case as outlined in the section above (also HRA’s Form W-119D lists the documents). You will also need to show documents that prove you have a right to remain in the apartment (like a lease), the amount of your rent arrears, and a rent demand or housing court papers from the landlord. Be prepared to explain, prove, and show why you fell into arrears. In most circumstances, you will also need to prove that you now have the ability to pay your monthly rent each month from your income/resources (referred to as “future ability”). HRA has a flyer on documents needed to apply.
I have submitted my application. What do I do now?
In addition to providing the documents as detailed above (also as listed on HRA’s Form W-119D), all new applicants must complete an interview. If you only applied for SNAP, then you would call 718-SNAP-NOW (718-762-7669) to interview. If you applied for cash assistance, you must call HRA at 929-273-1872 between 8:30am and 5pm on Monday through Friday. If you applied for a one-shot deal, you should receive a call from HRA within a few business days of your application. If you do not receive a call or you are otherwise unable to complete your interview, you should contact HRA at 718-557-1399 or go to your local Benefits Access Center.
