Am I eligible for SNAP and how do I apply?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as “food stamps”) provides food assistance to New Yorkers. The program helps families and individuals help cover the cost of their diet with nutritious foods. Payments are made one time a month and issued on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that can be used to purchase groceries. SNAP amounts and eligibility depend upon resources, family size, income and immigration status. 

How do I apply for SNAP?
You can apply for SNAP via the Human Resources Administration (HRA), the department that is in charge of SNAP in NYC. SNAP applications are available online on the Access HRA website located here https://a069-access.nyc.gov/accesshra/. You can also apply in person at a SNAP center, mail, or fax in a completed SNAP application.

Am I eligible for SNAP?
SNAP eligibility depends upon income, resources, family size, and immigration status.  If you are unsure, we recommend applying for SNAP and HRA will determine if you are eligible. 

How much could I receive in SNAP monthly?
SNAP monthly benefits are based on household size, rent, and income.  The amounts can change if situations change in your household. You can check the current maximum amounts here: https:// otda.ny.gov/programs/snap/#benefits

What do I need to provide to qualify for SNAP?  
The following are some documents you will need for a SNAP application for all members of your household: Proof of income; Proof of identity and age;  Proof of household composition; Proof of US citizenship or immigration status and; Proof of residence & rent expenses.
