Statement on the Appointment of Carmelyn Malalis as Human Rights Commission Chair

November 21, 2014

November 21, 2014, New York, NY—Legal Services NYC applauds Mayor de Blasio’s appointment of Carmelyn Malalis as Chair of the NYC Commission on Human Rights.

Ms. Malalis is an accomplished civil rights litigator with a deep commitment to enforcing our city’s robust civil rights statute. At Outten & Golden, she co-chaired the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual  & Transgender Workplace Rights Practice Group and the Family Responsibilities & Disability Discrimination Practice Group. She has collaborated with LSNYC and with many other legal advocacy and community based organizations, and has been an advocate, educator, and lecturer with organizations such as GABRIELA Network and the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women-Asia Pacific on issues relating to the exploitation of women through sex trafficking, labor migration, the mail-order bride industry, and militarized prostitution.

We look forward to working closely with Ms. Malalis as she transforms the City’s Commission on Human Rights into a hard-hitting enforcement agency that protects the civil rights of all New Yorkers.
