Statement from Raun Rasmussen on Passage of New York’s History Rent Reforms

June 14, 2019

June 14, 2019, NEW YORK, NY – Statement from Raun Rasmussen on the Passage of Historic Reforms to Strengthen New York’s Rent Laws and Tenant Protections:

“The package of reforms passed today is a huge victory for the millions of low-income tenants across New York City who are now protected by some of the strongest rent and tenant regulations in the country,” said Raun Rasmussen, Executive Director of Legal Services NYC, the largest civil legal provider in the country. “For too long, unscrupulous landlords have exploited, displaced, and harassed tenants through legal loopholes that allowed them to turn a profit by driving tenants and their families out of safe and affordable housing. Today’s historic reforms remove incentives to displace tenants and will go a long way to reduce evictions, strengthen New York City communities, and provide tenants with the protections and stability they deserve. We applaud New York State for passing these much-needed reforms and look forward to continuing the fight to keep New Yorkers in their homes.”
