The staff of Legal Services NYC is deeply saddened by the increase in
homophobic actions and violence perpetuated against Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people in Russia.

In June, Russia passed a new law that allows the government to arrest and detain people suspected of being gay, or even of being “pro-gay.” Russian politicians have vowed to enforce this discriminatory and harmful law both on people living in or visiting the country. Even visitors to the upcoming Winter Olympics being held in Russia this winter who are suspected of being gay will be subject to arrest. Earlier this summer, Russia passed another anti-gay law which would criminalize any statements seen as pro-gay, making people subject to arrest and fine. Russia has also banned the adoption of Russian-born children not only to gay couples, but also to people in any country which allows any type of gay marriage.

As advocates for low-income New Yorkers, including many LGBTQ New Yorkers, we have too often seen the effects of homophobic laws and policies, harassment and hate against our fellow New Yorkers. No one should be persecuted because of their sexual orientation or gender expression. We stand with LGBTQ Russians against homophobic laws and violence.
