LSNYC Launches Immigration Pro Bono Campaign
November 17, 2016, NEW YORK— LSNYC today announced the launch of an Immigration Pro Bono Campaign in response to mounting concerns on behalf of New York City’s immigrant communities. In recent weeks our intake hotline has been overwhelmed with immigrant callers who are panicked about the future, and who are desperate for legal representation. Alone, we cannot serve them all.
The goal of the new campaign is to provide legal relief to hundreds of additional clients over the coming months. Our Immigration unit is more than a dozen attorneys strong, and our Pro Bono department supports five different immigration initiatives: Asylum, U-Visas, VAWA Self-Petitions, Naturalizations, and Green Card Applications. Each of these initiatives has a pro bono manual, and an associated training. As with all of our cases, our attorneys also mentor pro bono attorneys on every immigration case. The naturalization and green card application work can be done in a clinic setting, provided a law firm partner is willing to both host and help administer the clinics. (Please note that we only offer clinics when a law firm or corporation can play a coordinating role, and that we only have capacity do a limited number of clinics.)
More information about these and other client service initiatives is available here. We know that many of our colleagues in New York’s legal community are already doing a lot of immigration work right now. In this extraordinary time, we hope that you will consider doing even more.
Law firms, corporations, law firm lawyers, and in-house counsel who are interested in partnering with LSNYC are encouraged to reach out to learn more. Please contact Adam J. Heintz, Director of Pro Bono Services, at 646-442-3582 or [email protected].
