Brooklyn Legal Services Corp. A Recognized for Domestic Violence Services

August 13, 2008

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, Borough President Marty Markowitz and
Congresswomen Carolyn Maloney and Yvette Clarke joined Congressman Ed
Towns last week in announcing the introduction of House Resolution 1394, which honors Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A (a program of Legal Services NYC) along with three other community organizations that "provide life-saving services to those who need it — the vulnerable and hurting victims of domestic violence.”

From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle:

Brooklyn has the highest number of family-related homicides of all New
York City boroughs, but, Rep. Clarke said firmly, we can change that.

“It is time. It is always time, to reflect on the violence
taking place in our city,” Clarke said. “Let it be known throughout all
areas of the city, through all neighborhoods of Brooklyn, that our
tolerance of abuse is zero.”

Representatives from the four organizations recognized in the
resolution — Sanctuary for Families, the New York City Family Justice
Center in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A and the North
Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence — were present to accept
awards honoring their continued efforts.

By identifying the achievements of these Brooklyn organizations in
House Resolution 1394, “Towns is putting the critical issue of domestic
violence front and center on the national stage,” said Laurel Eisner,
executive director of Sanctuary for Families.

“In 2007, the New York City Police Department responded to
299,435 domestic violence incidents,” the resolution reads. “And one in
three American women reports having been physically or sexually abused
by a husband or boyfriend. As many as 324,000 women each year
experience violence at the hand of an intimate partner while pregnant.”

Community organizations hope to combat these disturbing statistics.
