LSNYC Helps Make LGBTQ+ Immigrant’s Dream of Citizenship a Reality
As a gay man in Venezuela, Alfredo was at constant risk of violence, blackmail, and kidnapping. Fearing for his life, he sought an education in the U.S. to escape the danger he faced. Alfredo remained in the U.S. on a succession of student and tourist visas, but in time, his visa ran out and he overstayed.
During this time, Alfredo met and started a relationship with David and nearly 30 years later, they are still together. “Early in our relationship we made extensive efforts to explore ways that he might be able to remain in the U.S. legitimately,” said David. “We consulted with multiple attorneys and congressmen, all of whom stressed that, given his circumstances, there was simply no way for Alfredo to get asylum or citizenship.”
Alfredo soon found himself facing potential deportation, as immigration services initiated proceedings against him. With time running out, Alfredo applied for and received asylum on the basis of his sexual orientation, securing a Green Card and the ability to work.
For the first time since arriving in the U.S, Alfredo had a path to citizenship, but he could not afford to hire an attorney. He and David found Legal Services NYC who took his case when no one else would. Paralegal advocate Zamara Edwards helped Alfredo complete the citizenship application and prepare for his in-person interview.
“I cannot begin to describe the patience and attention to detail Ms. Edwards displayed,” said David. “She held our hand throughout the entire process, remaining throughout a constant beacon of hope and support for us both.”
On May 16, 2023, Alfredo had his interview, and just over a month later on June 22, 2023, he became a U.S. Citizen.
“We firmly believe that without your remarkable agency, and without LSNYC’s astonishing efforts on our behalf, this might never have happened. We are, and will always remain, awed and overwhelmed by the kindness, compassion, and skillful assistance provided by Legal Services NYC.”
